Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the daring daylight theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris, French officials confirmed Sunday, one week after the €88 million heist shocked the world.

Takeaways:

  • One suspect was detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria.

  • DNA traces reportedly helped identify at least one of the men, both in their 30s and known to police.

  • Investigators from a special police unit made the arrests, though it’s unclear if any jewels have been recovered.

  • The stolen items included priceless pieces tied to Marie-Amélie, Marie-Louise, and Empress Eugénie — part of France’s cultural heritage.

The Louvre’s director called the incident a “terrible failure,” and French officials have compared the cultural loss to the Notre Dame Cathedral fire. Visitors expressed relief at the arrests, though many said their main hope is for the jewels’ recovery. Read More

2. New Jersey Officer Stopped At ATM And Pizzeria Instead Of Investigating Double-Murder

A New Jersey police sergeant has been charged with misconduct after allegedly stopping at an ATM and a pizzeria instead of promptly investigating a double-murder scene.

Takeaways:

  • Sgt. Kevin Bollaro of Franklin Township Police allegedly ignored multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and screams in Pittstown on Aug. 1.

  • GPS data shows he drove away from the scene to a bank ATM and later to Duke’s Pizzeria, where he stayed nearly an hour.

  • Bollaro allegedly falsified his incident report, claiming he canvassed the area when he had not.

  • The next day, the bodies of Lauren Semanchik (33) and Tyler Webb (29) were found about 600 feet from the original 911 caller’s location.

  • Prosecutors say they were killed by New Jersey State Police Lt. Ricardo Santos, who later took his own life.

4. US and China Agree on Framework of Trade Deal Ahead of Trump–Xi Meeting

Photo: Reuters

The U.S. and China have reached a framework for a potential trade deal set to be finalized when President Donald Trump meets Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed Sunday.

Takeaways

  • Both sides agreed to defer new tariffs and finalize a deal on TikTok’s U.S. operations.

  • China will pause tightened controls on rare earth exports for one year.

  • Trump’s threatened 100% tariff on Chinese imports is unlikely to take effect.

  • China will resume large-scale U.S. soybean purchases, signaling relief for farmers.

  • The Trump–Xi meeting is scheduled for Thursday in South Korea.

Bessent said the countries had “reached a substantial framework for the two leaders,” telling CBS that “the tariffs will be averted.” The framework includes a long-awaited agreement on TikTok, with U.S. firms set to control the platform’s algorithm and six of seven board seats for its American arm.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration works to prevent another escalation in the ongoing U.S.–China trade conflict. Beijing confirmed that both negotiating teams had achieved “a basic consensus” and would finalize “specific details” in coming days.

The deal also delays China’s new export restrictions on rare earth minerals, critical materials for electronics and renewable energy components for one year. In return, Trump is expected to suspend plans for the 100% tariff previously slated for November.

Bessent, himself a soybean farmer, noted that Chinese importers would resume significant purchases of U.S. soybeans. “Our farmers will feel really good about what’s coming for this season and the next several years,” he said.

The broader framework follows U.S. announcements of trade agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia and developing frameworks with Thailand and Vietnam moves designed to deepen Washington’s economic footprint across Asia. Read More

6. Treasure Trove Of Gold Coins, Ancient Jewelry Unearthed In Christian City Near Sea Of Galilee

Archaeologists have unearthed a stunning treasure trove of nearly 100 gold coins and intricate jewelry near the ruins of the ancient Christian city of Hippos, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.

Takeaways:

  • The discovery, made in July by a University of Haifa excavation team, includes 97 pure gold coins and dozens of pearl- and gemstone-inlaid earrings from the Byzantine era.

  • Among the hoard is a rare tremissis coin minted around 610 A.D. during Emperor Heraclius’s revolt—only the second such coin ever found in Israel.

  • Metal detectorist Edie Lipsman made the find after a stone shifted between two walls, revealing the hidden cache.

  • Researchers said remnants of fabric still clung to some coins, suggesting they were once kept in a cloth pouch.

  • Archaeologist Michael Eisenberg called it “one of the largest Byzantine-era hoards found on dry land in Israel.”

Researcher Arleta Kowalewska said the earrings’ craftsmanship—featuring semi-precious stones and pearls—was so exquisite that she hopes modern jewelers will recreate them.

Eisenberg added that the coins’ near-perfect preservation is rare: “When you find jewelry and gold that looks new after 1,400 years, it’s a breathtaking experience.”

Earlier this year, excavators at Hippos also uncovered what may be the world’s oldest Christian nursing home, with a mosaic reading, “Peace be with the elders.”. Read More
